Got their asses sued off for this, too. Ever wondered why it’s called “dueling banjos” when it’s a banjo and a guitar? Because it’s an unacknowledged ripoff of another tune. The band it belonged to was called the Dillards, and they won the suit.
My favorite Dillards tune was, “What’s Time to a Hog?”

Still, it’s a pretty cool exchange.

It’s art. Whoever deserves credit.

I think the original tune is Yankee Doodle, anyhow.

Wikipedia agrees (at least as of this moment, who knows what it will say tomorrow).

This is a pretty good answer, it seems. The Wikipedia entry does credit the original people, but doesn’t go into this detail.

Well! That last link comes closest to the story I heard…though I thought it was the Dillards who sued (and won). I saw them in concert once.
And that’s all I know.

I love the internet, being able to find answers as quickly as you can formulate the right questions.
